ACLU Youth Activist Scholarship Program:  Are you an activist?  Fifteen high school students in the nation will receive a scholarship in the amount of $7,000 each if they can demonstrate a passion for civil liberties. Students must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better.  Chances improve if you can show demonstrated financial need.  The ACLU will be accepting applications until Nov. 19, 2009.  To be considered, your local ACLU affiliate must nominate the student and submit his/her application to the ACLU’s national office.  See me if you are interested, I have the email address of our local representative.  We will also need to arrange an interview with this person.

Wine Grape Growers:  There are two scholarships from this association.  Both applications for the scholarships must be postmarked by November 30, 2009.  The first scholarship is the Walter Clore Scholarship for Viticulture and Enology:  Students must be planning to enroll in a college or university and be interested in the studies of viticulture and/or enology. You must be a Washington state resident but may attend a college out-of-state.  Academic merit and leadership are important.   A 500 word essay is required, two letters of reference and official school transcripts.  The second scholarship is the John Farmer Scholarship for Viticulture and Enology.  Preference for this award is based on demonstrated financial need.  Again, you must be planning on pursuing courses in viticulture or enology.  Academic merit and leadership are important as well, but financial need is a determining factor.  A 500 word essay is required for this scholarship, also.

The Principal’s Leadership Award:  If you are in the top 20% of your Senior class and have demonstrated strong leadership ability, you may request to be nominated from RHS for this award.  Scholarships vary with the national winner receiving $12,000.00.  To apply you must go online at:  www.applylists.net and follow the onscreen instructions.  The access key is PLA.  You must then print it out and return to Ms. Edwards, who will then meet with Mr. Hill to choose the nominee.  Please bring your application to Ms. Edwards not later than Nov. 30th.  

Hispanic Heritage Foundation:  Hispanic Seniors may apply for this scholarship on-line at:  www.colgate.com/hazlau  You must complete the application and a short essay on “How can education impact the heritage of Hispanic generations to come?”  All applications must be received by November 30th, 2009.  There is one $10,000 grant and fifteen $1,000 grant.

Boston University:  If you plan to attend this university you could apply for the Boston University Trustee Scholarship Competition.  This is a 4-year, full tuition scholarship.  You must complete the scholarship by Dec. 1, 2009.  For more information and to apply, go to:  www.bu.edu/admissions/trustee

Washington Aggregates and Concrete Assoc.:  This is an essay contest open to all high school students ages 16-18.  See me for more information and for the list of themes to consider for the essay, and the format.  The essay must be submitted no later than Dec. 4, 2009.

General College Scholarship Application (Hispanic):  Must be of Hispanic heritage, a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.  You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and plan to enroll in a degree seeking program at a 2 or 4 yr. college.  Must apply for FAFSA .  Deadline is Dec. 15, 2009.  Go to www.hsf.net for more information and application.

AXA Achievement:  If you are active in your community and have led a project that benefitted others, or have overcome personal challenges, you may compete.  The award is from $10,000 to $25,000.  You must apply by Dec. 15, 2009.  Go to www.axa-achievement.com

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation:  If you are a young person who has demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit or initiative you could win $1,000 -- $10,000 in scholarships.  All applicants must be nominated by a dues-paying member of NFIB.  You may apply online at http://www.NFIB.com/YEA starting from October 31st until December 31, 2009.  If you are chosen as a semi-finalist, you will be required to submit a 1,000 word essay describing how you have demonstrated your achievement.  Students in FBLA are encouraged to apply, as well as anyone who has started his or her own business.  You may include any community service you have done as well.  An officially established business is not a requirement.  See me for more information such as guidelines and FAQ’s. 

Gates Millenium Scholarship:  Seniors must be Hispanic, African American, Native American or Asian American and US citizens.  Must have a minimum GPA of 3.3 and demonstrated financial need.  Deadline is Jan. 1, 2010.  To apply go to: www.gmsp.org

O’Donnell Family MS Scholarship:  This award is for anyone with multiple sclerosis or anyone who is the child of someone with MS. To apply go to:  www.MSwashington.org and click on Financial Support under Programs and Services.  Applications will be accepted through Jan. 15, 2010.  Awards range from $1500 to $3000 per year.  Awards may be renewed for up to four years. 

ESA Foundation Scholarship:  This foundation awards more than 150 scholarships a year.  Criteria for selection include character, leadership, service, financial need, and scholastic ability.  To apply, go to the website at www.esaintl.com/esaf or see me for an application.  There is a $5.00 processing fee.  You must have a 3.00 to apply.  Applications must be postmarked no later than Feb. 1, 2010. 

 

Burger King Scholars:  $1,000 scholarships are available to seniors who have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, work part-time a minimum of 10 hrs. per week or 40 wks. Per year, are active in their communities and plan to attend college in the fall.  To apply go to:  www.haveityourwayfoundation.org/bksp_application.html; Access Key is:  BKS.  The application process is now open and will close on Feb. 1, 2010.

Frank Kazmierczak Memorial Migrant Scholarship:  Must have a recent history of migration for agricultural employment, teaching as a career goal, scholastic achievement, and financial need.  Go to www.migrant.net for more information.  Deadline is Feb. 1st.

KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program:  Up to $5,000 per year could be awarded to a senior with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.  The student must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.  Complete your application at:  www.kfcscholars.org  The deadline is Feb. 10, 2010.  There are a few short answer responses.  You must be planning to attend a school in Washington state.

Jesse Epstein Scholarship:  Seniors who reside in a housing complex that is a member of the PCRC Housing Authority and will be attending a 4 yr. college may apply.  Application deadline is Feb. 12, 2010.  For more information, go to the website at:  www.pnrcnahro.org  You may also apply to the same website with the same requirements for the Challenge College Scholarships.  A third scholarship in this category is for students planning on attending a community college.  This is the Community College Scholarship.  The first scholarship is for $10,000.  The second one is for $4,000.  The 3rd is for $2,000.  The deadlines are the same for all three.

Marist College:  If you are willing to go to Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY and you want to major in either Computer Science or Information Technology and Systems, this is a great deal.  The college is awarding twelve (12) scholarships for full tuition, plus room and board for four full years.  You will also receive a laptop computer, participation in high-level internships, special advising from the Dean, mentors from companies such as IBM and Verizon, Aetna and Pepsi, a two semester course in game development and an exclusive summer orientation.  Apply online for admission at www.marist.edu/admission  and on the application check the box labeled “National Science Foundation Scholarship Program.”  Admission applicants should apply early, but no later than Feb. 15, 2010.  Marist College is on the banks of the Hudson River and is in the heart of a high tech area. 

National Co-op Scholarship Program:  There are 8 NCCE partner Colleges who award scholarship through this program.  These include Drexel, Johnson & Wales, Kettering, Pace, R.I.T., Univ. of Cincinnati, Univ. of Toledo and Wentworth Inst. of Technology.  Complete an application on-line at www.co-op.edu to apply.  Applications are due with essay on Feb. 15, 2010.

Washington Apple Education Foundation Scholarships:  If you or your parents are involved or connected with tree fruit programs as orchard workers, warehouse workers or grower-members there are scholarships available.  You only need to fill out one universal scholarship form and may apply for a number of scholarships in this way.  There are three pages of different scholarships that are included in this one application!  See me for a copy, or you may apply at www.waef.org as well.  The applications must be postmarked on or before March 1, 2010 to be eligible.

Paul Lauzier Scholarship Foundation:  This is a local scholarship that is open to RHS Seniors as well as former graduates attending a school in Washington state.  Applicants must have resided in Grant County for a minimum of two years prior to applying.  Students must be planning on attending a post-secondary school within the state of Washington.  Applications must be typed, and may be downloaded or students may complete a Word document located on the website at http://www.lauzier.org  Two letters of recommendation within the current academic year must be provided.  The application deadline is Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 5:00 pm.  Applications must be either mailed to the Lauzier Foundation at the Ephrata office, or postmarked and mailed on or before the due date.  There is a secure drop box at the Ephrata office. Washington Cattle Feeders Association:  Scholarships are limited, but range from $1,000 to $1,500.  You must be planning to enroll in an area of study pertaining to the beef cattle industry and have a family history in the beef industry.  Academic merit, leadership, and personal accomplishments will also be considered.  The application deadline is March 25th.  See me for an application form.

US Bank Drawing:  Log onto usbank.com/studentloans  and participate in a random drawing for an award in the amount of $1,000.  You may apply between October 2009 through March 2010.   There are 40 awards available this year.

Washington Financial Aid Assoc. (Ethnic Awareness Committee Scholarship):  Award varies up to $1,500.  Deadline is April 6, 2010.  For more elibility information go to:  www.wfaa.org

National Association of Hispanic Journalists (Ford Motor Company Scholarship):  College-bound high school seniors who wish to pursue a career in print broadcast, online and visual journalism may apply.  Award amount is up to $3,000.00.  Application deadline is April 6, 2010.  To apply, go to the website at:  www.nahj.org

Ruben Salazar Scholarship:  Seniors who are planning on pursuing careers in English or Spanish-language print, photo, broadcast or online journalism may apply.  The deadline is April 6, 2010.  To apply and for more information, go to:  www.nahj.org

Ephrata Sportsmen’s Association:  Any student from Grant County may apply for this award.  You must submit a transcript, standardized test scores, a completed FAFSA, a 500 word essay and two letters of recommendation.  This must be received by April 25, 2010.  See me for a copy of the criteria and the address for mailing.  The award is for $600.00.  This may be used for tuition or books by Dec. 31, 2010.  It is expected that the winner will attend one of the monthly meetings to inform the membership of her/his plans for use of the funds.

  Migrant or Agricultural Specific Scholarships:  Website:  www.migrant.net                                                                 Gloria and Joseph Mattera Scholarship:  Applicant must have a history of migration, scholastic potential, demonstrate financial need, have been enrolled or accepted into college, vocational, or technical school.  No deadline.  Applications are viewed on a case by case basis.                                                                                                                                           Berrien Fragos Thorn Arts Scholarship:  Demonstrate an interest in pursuing further development of their talents in one of the following disciplines:  visual, painting, media, literary or craft arts.  Visit website for deadline information. 

Student Paths:  Student who enroll for the new online Pathsport tool at:  www.pathsport.com will be eligible to win at a monthly drawing of $1,000.  Students must be in grades 9-12. 

Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC):  Students interested in scholarship opportunities through ROTC programs may begin applying for the 2010 season now.  If accepted, full tuition and other financial benefits worth up to $180,000 is available.  The nearest NROTC school is the University of Idaho.  You must be a U.S. citizen, be at least 17 years of age, complete high school, receive minimum designated scores on either ACT or SAT, and apply for either the Navy or the Nurse Corps.  As far as your degree, you may major in any field.  For Military Service, there is no obligation for the first year of college.  After that, you receive a commission upon completion and have a four year active duty obligation.  See me for more information or go to www.nrotc.navy.mil for more information. There is also an ROTC program at CWU.

CWU Scholarships:  Central has a new full tuition waiver program, called the Central Pledge.  If you are eligible for Pell or State Need Grants, and these fail to cover all of your tuition, Central will fill the gap.  Furthermore, besides academic scholarships, they have scholarships for athletic, musical and/or theatrical talent.  For a full list of awards go to:  www.cwu.edu/-finaid

.   The Christian Connector:  If you are planning to attend a Christian college, there is a website to go to for scholarship information.  They also hold a drawing for a $2,500.00 scholarship.  Go to www.ChristianConnector.com  You may also call 800-667-0600 for more information.  There are additional free web resources online.
